UNDERWING
A wearable smart armband and companion app that helps reduce infant mortality rate and gives new parents a sense of safety. This project was created for my 'Product design and development' class at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). We used the agile method of product development and created this project over the course of 5 design sprints.

Challenge
We started this project by interviewing new parents and were shocked by the number of children killed by or at high risk of febrile seizures every year. It was our goal to reduce infant mortality and to give the worried parents some peace of mind.
Research
We did a market analysis of the other baby monitors available. We discovered barely any other wearable and reusable temperature tracking solutions. A market analysis also showed that this idea should lead to a profitable product.
Mood board
I put together a mood board using all different ideas that the members of our team had.
Persona
We discovered that our personas value a highly accurate, comfortable, and easy to clean solution. I realized that one of the most important aspects of our solution would be earning the parents and other caretakers' trust. We decided we wanted a solution that was affordable for lower-middle-class parents.
User Journey Map
This shows the journey of a user using our proposed solution. We analyzed the current user journey map and identified the pain points to our users in order to give them a better experience.
Structure
I created a master list of all the elements we wanted to include in the app. I also worked on how the onboarding would work and how we would deal with notifications since those were extremely important parts of the experience. This organization led to the basic structure of the app.
Wireframes
I created the initial wireframes of the app using paper templates but quickly moved on to using Figma. You can try out our Figma prototype here.
User Testing
We went through several rounds of user testing and feedback at the end of each sprint including a survey through survey monkey. The comments we received on our final design were extremely positive and we hope to keep working on it.
Surface design
We created a color palette, logo, and custom illustrations and animations to use in the final app. The name of our product, 'Underwing' means to act as someone's guardian or protector. It is also a play on the position of the band which is under the child's arm.
Final screens
I incorporated several rounds of iterations and feedback to reach this final design of the app. The final app was designed keeping in mind all the information we learned from parents to ensure they get the best product.
Final walkthrough
I created the final screens for the app using Adobe XD. You can try it out here.
Physical Product
For the wearable component of the product, we created a seamless skin safe silicone armband that exceeded the expectations of the parents we interviewed. I created the renders of the band using Rhino 3d. Certain features, like the holes for an adjustable and breathable band and the grips were my idea.
Pitch Video
I wrote the script and helped create the final pitch video for our project. I am proud to say that our final presentation won the competition in our class and was ranked the best project out of all 15.
